I haven’t written much publicly about my pending adoption. It’s not that there is nothing to say. There are endless things to say. Thoughts of Asher and Phoebe consume huge portions of my mind. My heart is still full from the brief phone call I had with them both two Sundays ago. Asher sang me a song and asked when I was coming for him. Phoebe’s sweet voice, that sounds so much like her brother’s, burst through my living room on speakerphone: “hujambo!” And then she asked me if her room was ready. In Swahili.

What do they know of the ocean they will cross to get here, of the massive change that awaits? But they sounded cheerful, hopeful. They sounded well. I know they have had more to eat these days thanks to the generosity of this woman and her vision. I know that their rooms are ready. And I pray that they will face the changes with courage and faith. That their faith will not disappoint. That when they come here, whatever other emotions they will work through, they will find love and they will feel joy.

My own emotions are just at the surface, ready to overflow. But for now - contained. I feel myself tightening the lid. I need them to stay put, where I can see them. Make sure they are real. Keep them to myself. In these past few weeks, I can feel myself turning more and more inward. It’s kind of exhausting in a quiet sort of way. I’m not ready to share it all just yet. But those days are coming. And I am beginning to sense that they are coming sooner than I might have imagined.

Thanks for your ongoing prayers for me, and for them. Keep praying. There are just a few key things that have to happen in order for my final hearing to go forward, and before I can begin immigration paperwork. I’m adopting from a war zone. So I guess I shouldn’t really be surprised to discover that the conflict in the region is making things difficult. God’s timing is perfect. In the meantime, I’m getting ready. And I’m waiting. Thanks for sharing the journey with me. I’m excited about the next leg I see coming, just over the horizon.
